Captain America Civil War - LaF 144

For episode 144 of LaF, Ryan Bull and Richard Lusk are reviewing Captain America: Civil War. From Marvel Studios and directed by the Russo Brothers, comes the biggest comic book film to date. All is not well within the Avengers when political pressure on the group causes Iron Man and Captain America to come to blows. The other superheroes pick sides and get ready for the biggest, baddest knockdown brawl ever. Our hosts also discuss the future of the Marvel franchise, rank this film among other comic book films, and try to figure out if Robert Downey Jr. is getting too old for the series.

Room - LaF 130

Today’s review is of Lenny Abrahamson’s harrowing film adaptation of the New York Times best selling novel Room. Brie Larson’s powerful portrayal as Joy Newsome, has made her an early front runner to win the Best Actress Oscar. Having been forced to live in terror in a small locked room for seven years, she tries to be the best parent possible to her five year old son, played by newcomer Jacob Newsome, and raise him sheltered from the horror of their situation, while giving him all the warmth and love of a normal childhood. The film uses the bond of mother and child to explore thematically the incredible power and resiliency of love. The Academy of Motion Pictures has nominated this universally acclaimed movie for two other awards in Adapted Screenplay and Best Director.
